The wider the range of his imagos and friendly identifications the more capable will the analyst be of understanding a variety of people and of tolerating their difficulties and anxieties. By imagos I mean also all his past and present object-relations, which have become internalised and which add width and depth to the richness of his feelings and to his sympathetic response. In other words, experiences of life and experience in life in good contact with all kinds of people in an ordinary way should have added to his humanity, sense of humor, detachment and to the wealth of his personality which, to put it in [George] Meredith’s phrase, ‘should be as broad as a thousand beeves at pasture.’ I think all this plays an important role in the analyst’s work. Analysis cannot be done in a laboratory atmosphere.”
